Memo from Martin P Burns of PricewaterhouseCoopers

It is possible to have more than one version, so a smart developer
can do all that testing.

<tip type="multiple versions of IE on windows">
You can have as many versions as you like, using either
* VMWare or similar so you're running multiple Windows instances
  (fast machine is required), each with a different version
* Multiple-partition (ie multi-boot) machine, with one version on each

This is internet explorer we're talking about. Or are
you unaware that you can only have one version if IE on
a windows machine? A smart web developer would have
multiple versions of a particular browser on their
machine. Since that isn't possible with IE, one should
go for the most widely used version (my site stats show
IE 6 just barely beating IE 5).
