what about data flow diagrams:

seem to be simple enough for a client to understand, as it gives a broad
brush description of the core process, related entities (users,
suppliers...) and data structures.
The only problem is that it does not describe decisions, timings etc.
for that use simple flow charts.

A good book I'm using:
	Information Systems: a Management Perspective by Steve Alter
	if you go to a library its chapter 3, but reading the book makes
sense eventually ;-)
