[thelist] digital handshake on website (was: dedicated server in the us)

As far as I'm concerned, forward what I wrote to anyone dealing with
Rackspace. To me it just felt dirty (and I wear a marketing hat about 1/2
the time so that's saying something).

read it - interesting. i would feel pretty screwed in the same
circumstances...

i was on their site a few minutes ago and was reading the page and got
hit with a 'digital handshake' from one of their sales representatives -
ie. they start chatting to you with a little java applet
<http://www.groopz.com>. i felt a bit 'invaded' at first, but he was
nice and we chatted about requirements and stuff, and he seemed
genuinely interested in my client (okay - he was looking for a sale but
it was cool anyway). so yeah, it was a good experience, and i am now
getting sent a proposal, so i guess it works!

nice little application for interacting directly with your customers and
getting sales. it's like walking into a shop and a sales assistant
coming up to you and asking you if you need any help. if every website
did it, i think it might get a bit annoying, but it was so unique to me
that i have to say it worked.
