I do the same thing.
Its less bother because if you want something to open in a new window,
you click with the middle button. If, however, you want to view it in
the same window then you just left click.
No bother with left clicks opening in new windows when you don't want
them to. I should be the one who decides what happens with my browser
and if I want a link to open in the same page, a new window or even a
new tab.

I don't mind having to press 'back' to get back to the main page as I
decided that's what I wanted to do. I do however resent in having to
close loads of windows when I could have them neatly arranged as tabs,
or in my history.

If you really want to have links opening in new windows, give those of
us who don't like it the ability to turn it off.

Basically everyone is different, some like links opening in new windows,
some hate it and some are indifferent. Give us the choice and we will
pick what we want to do.
