That's pretty much my conclusion as well.  No way in hell am I going to
agree to store thousands of people's personal information in the clear, on
a public Web server.  That's a shockingly bad idea.  The bad PR
implications for a Fortune 100 company are just too big to contemplate.  No
manner of CYA will save bacon if that data gets into the wild.  Honestly,
I'm a bit surprised that more people didn't throw up their arms at the
total lack of security in this setup.  Maybe I'm a bit on the paranoid side
when it comes to storing personal info.

I also agree about the file-locking problem.  Though the worst that can
happen there is that some personal data is never collected.  ADO is pretty
good about managing locks on a flat file and each row is really tiny.
Still, why take the risk?
