Um, not it isn't. XHTML is HTML with some modifications to make it more
conforming to the rules of XML.
HTML, that is, *strict* HTML 4.0 is "tableless CSS stuff and standard HTML".
Actually, both HTML4 and XHTML1 allow for table-based layouts. It's
just that those who use strict HTML usually realise that table-based
layouts are a bad idea.

Yes. All browsers can view them fine (so long as you hide your CSS from
crappy browsers like Navigator4, IE3, and IE4).
