you don't have to use the history palette at all. i'm very confused why
no one has suggested this, unless of course i'm misunderstanding the
problem.

edit > preferences > general... on the drop-down box labeled "redo"
choose Ctrl+Y and enter how many history states you want (i've chosen
50). you will then be able to press ctrl+z up to 50 times for undo's.
and ctrl+y 50 times as well.


if this is not what you are talking about, please clarify.
