I wouldn't suggest a WYSIWYG editor for a school. Knowing what the tags
mean is still a Good Thing. Perhaps in a few years the tools will get to
the point that you don't need to look under the hood, but for now it's
still necessary.

BBEdit Lite would work and is free.

Pagespinner comes highly recommended but is $30 (used to be shareware, but
now I think it's a time-limited demo which you can unlock after paying
for).
Web Spinner X is free.

I've not found a WYSIWYG tool that worked well enough for me to be happy
using (and yes, I've tried Dreamwever). I started out with Alpha, but it's
taken them too long to port to OSX (I think it's because they're heavily
dependent upon Tcl/Tk, and that didn't support Aqua until recently) so I
switched to BBEdit a while back.
