I think the only thing that "everybody" would agree on is if you can
make a page look and behave like you want and also get the W3C's
stamp of approval on it, it's not a bad thing.

Some are of the opinion that if you have to use invalid markup to
achieve what you want, you should seriously consider revising "what
you want" ... in other words, you should work within standards as
well as within what "valid" markup your target browsers support.

And maybe some that are mostly interested in getting things to look
and work like they want in the browser or browsers they judge to to a
good job rendering "valid" markup ... whatever their subjective
standard is ... while hoping that in the future, all browsers will
render valid markup as they anticipate they should.

Nomatter how much thought is put into determining what the standard
is, there's always an arbitrary element to it ... for instance, there
aren't too many browsers that will refuse to make <table
height="100%"> vertically fill the window ... but it's a no-no in the
eyes of the W3C.
