You might want to consider Movable Type <http://movabletype.org>.
If you set it up, you can set the CSS and there are buttons for <b>,<i>,<a href=> that are really simple to use plus an option for adding images. The interface is completely customizable so you can take out any of the "scary" stuff. ;)

Setting it up isn't for the faint of heart, but once you've got it working, it's a piece of cake!
