I'm pretty happy with my Olympus D490-Zoom (2.1 MegaPixels, 1600x1200).
I think that particular model has been phased out, but they have other
cams well within your price range. Some of my pics on iStockPhoto.com
were done with the Olympus. You can check some samples at:

The "iron pig" shots and the office-related pics were done with my
D-490. The others were done with either my Fuji 3500ix APS, or with my
Minolta X-700 35mm. Keep in mind that I've cleaned those pictures up a
little bit (mostly color balance),

Someone else already mentioned dpreview.com. Great place to get
equipment comparisons.

You might also want to look at Nikon's CoolPix cameras or maybe check
eBay for deals on a Sony CyberShot 707.

I wouldn't get anything below 2.1Mp, and if you find one that you like
in your price range, go for 3Mp or better.

Also keep in mind the type of media that the camera uses (SmartMedia,
CompactFlash, Sony Memory Stick), and other interfaces (serial, USB,
Firewire), as this will affect your total cost of ownership.
