The FSO uses the account called ISUR_<machineName> AFAIK. Just by giving
that one specific account read permissions on the restricted folder, you're
not hurting anything. Unless, of course, someone compromises IIS, but then
the FSO would be the least of your concerns... :)

As far as the broken image thing goes:

The short answer:

<img src="http://www.whatever.com/something.jpg"> will work in every browser
you run across (unless it's a text-only one!). You could see a slight
performance decrease (the page could take longer to load), but at least it
will work...

The long answer:

I don't know enough to be much more of a help to you... Is the HTML
dynamically generated, or is it static? Is it exactly the same code between
the protected and public versions, or are they two independent things?
