[thelist] HTTP request question: returning just the status code

For an automatic link checker it would be useful to be able to make an HTTP
request to a web server that returns /just/ the status code (and possibly
other headers) but not the full document. Is this possible? I imagine it is
as browsers seem to be able to do this and get back the last-modified date
before deciding whether or not to download the document.
