For some reason it is a few points smaller than other sites at the same
default setting, in WinXP IE6.0 1024*768 at "medium" it is like an 8pt
font and at "smaller" - (default on some versions of IE) it is much too
small to read.

My guess is that on a mac there's no way it would be legible at default
sizes.

you are using less than 1em font sizes, that would do it....
