since datetimes are stored in the database as integers (i.e. in no
specified format), what it all comes down to is formatting the date for
display purposes, and how the database recognizes date format strings on
input

why not display it as yyyy-mm-dd, and then there's no ambiguity if it gets
posted back into the database
