Permalink is just short for Permanent Link.

Lets take http://HiveLogic.com/ as an example (purely because I was
reading it this morning).

Once a post disappears off the bottom of the page you would have to
click through "previous posts" pages to find it, and you wouldn't be
able to link to it directly if there werent permalinks to each of the
posts.

Thankfully, Dan has added a Permalink to each of them. Click on the Date
of any of his posts and you get taken to its permanent home.
