Hi Andrew

SMTP error 500 usually means an invalid command was sent to the server.
What was the mail() command used in your PHP script?
What are the SMTP [mail_function] settings in your php.ini file?

Thank Rob the installation of the smtp server has made a difference and
changing
the php.ini file too alas I get a different error :)

Ran into problems sending Mail. Response: 500 unknown ??? command
"localhost"

AFAIK That should have done the job.  You're at the limits of my experience
