[would have jumped in here sooner but I had to go and spend the weekend
in a drunken stupor due to an especially taxing site launch]

Mark, I've gone through your previous messages and I didn't see any info
on the setup procedure you used to install MySQL. Was this a DIY compile
of MySQL or did you grab a package from somewhere like entropy.ch?

Some things we'll need to know before we can offer any help:

1: Has Mysql worked properly before this, or have you never been
able to get in?
2: Have you run 'mysql_install_db' since installing? This script sets up
the baseline privs for mysql and can also be used to go back to a clean
setup (with a little tweaking)
3: Have you tried logging in as root without the '-p' flag?
4: How about as 'root@<machinename>' instaed of just 'root' or
'root at localhost'?

The authentication problem you're having can be caused by a couple of
things, but with a bit more info we should be able to help you sort it
out without having to reinstall MySQL.

G.
