Telnet into it first.  You can Telnet to the IP address and port of
the SMTP server or it's DNS name and not use a port number. Say
smtp.mydomain.edu would produce the same effect as Telnet
127.0.0.1:25. After each line hit return or whatever your keyboard
has above right shift.
