ok, this is enough to officially make me despise mac/ie.  the problem went away when i commented out the doctype.  the most standards compliant browser my ass.  more standards compliant than win/ie my ass too.  who cares if it's "more" standards compliant if it means better support for the more esoteric aspects of css when it can't get simple things like this right.  i can't believe specifying a doctype, totally valid xhtml for the doctype and totally valid css would break *so* horribly.  i should *not* have to remove a doctype in something that's supposedly the king's shit in order to get something as simple as a background image for a table cell to work.  i'm almost tempted to leave the doctype in and have the design break in mac/ie for the main website as a sign of my distaste.

enough of this crap, i'm starting in on the guinness alittle early this evening -- like *now*.
