well, yeah, if the content isn't a paragraph-worth of text...

yes, but <span> imparts no structural or semantic value... on top of
that, i'd like a user of CMS to be able to use it, and the WYSIWYG we
built uses plain ol' <li>foo</li> tags... to add <span>s would just
be more code soup for a stylistic effect... to expect users to
manually add them would also be problematic...

yep, pretty similar to the prototype code i was using to test other
elements within <li>s...
