[thelist] What is "scalability"?

Scalability is not just about the hardware. It is about a combination of
hardware and software that allows a system to grow and adapt over time, not
only to increasing loads but also to changing business needs. If, everytime
a new business rule gets added you have to overhaul a major part of the
framework then that system is not scalable. That's why OO development and
the software engineering process are so important.

My definition of "scalable" is the ability of a system--including both
hardware and software--to handle larger loads when required. <snip>
