Take a look at Advanced Mail Verify, a spammer's - er, marketer's - tool to
check email vailidity. Windows only. www.mailutilities.com

It will screen for syntax problems as well as invalid email addresses via
pinging (?). Caveat: a lot of ISP's give false responses to machines testing
emails so this latter type of test is not as reliable. Still for around $40,
you can clean up some portion of the list before mailing.
