I did look at pegasus before, the mail client has a good reputation.

You might want to look at Mercury Mail (free) by the developer of Pegasus
mail client. It handles POP and SMTP. I only use it for development so I
can't vouch for how well it handles mail on a production server, but it has
a good reputation.
