[thelist] authenticating with mozilla/opera/w3 validator

hi.

i'm trying to use mozilla, opera, and the w3c validator on a site i'm
working on right now. it's an intranet and so is not on a public server.

when i try to reach the site using http://servername/ both mozilla and
opera effectively say "we cannot authenticate so access is denied". how
do i send user credentials with those browsers? (IE does it
automatically).

i looked through the preferences in both programs to see if there was
any sort of authentication thing, but i had no luck.

as well as with the validator, it states that i should have been promted
with a login box, however this is not the case in either ie or mozilla.

do i have any solutions besides moving the document to a public area?

thanks,
chris.
