I am with Richard on this one.

Masks and layers are the way to go. But it adds complexity, you say?
Sure, but it adds flexibility. Always good to leave pixels alone, you
never know when you will change your mind. Plus it is a much more
accurate way to get the effect. I would also add that you should work
in sRGB colorspace or turn color management off entirely so that you
will be sure to have the background color match.
