Probably too late for your class, but here are a few suggestions:

Letterror -- Erik van Blokland and Just van Rossum (brother of Guido as in
Python) -- are digital type gurus and have nice handlettered site:
http://www.letterror.com/

This Enschede font foundry has some of the best specimen examples of any
online foundry:
http://www.teff.nl/

The Storm Type Foundry has beautiful downloadable PDF specimen books,
although the site's rather basic:
http://www.stormtype.com/

For typographic animation, make sure you include Bembo's Zoo:
http://www.bemboszoo.com/
(Flash)

Flash-based typographic experiments:

Counterspace is a capsule typographic history and glossary in Flash:
http://counterspace.motivo.com/
A bit dated, and being overhauled, I believe.

Busy typography blog:
http://www.typographi.ca/

Dean Allen, of Textism, has strong opinions on typography on his site, and
some good primers:

Ever wanted to see every square centimeter of Trajan's column?

rope/Italy/Lazio/Roma/Rome/Trajans_Column/home.html
Ostensibly the finest expression of the Roman letterform. (Well, the
inscription on the base.)

Typographic experimentation, with some very nice layouts

(top-left navigation, "experiments")

A good site devoted to public lettering in London:
http://www.publiclettering.org.uk/

Very innovative Java-based tool for creating typefaces based on squiggles:
http://alphabet.tmema.org/

Finally, Fontscape, while itself a basic site, is an amazing way of
exploring fonts by their characteristics:
http://www.fontscape.com/

Hope some of those prove useful, or at least interesting!
