Because the messenger service is normally used by the system to deliver
messages such as print notifications. The messenger service, in and of
itself, is not necessarily a bad thing.

I'll second the vote for installing ZoneAlarm. If you install it, I bet
that you'll quickly become unpleasantly surprised at how many random
probes that your computer sees that you currently aren't even aware
of....

I'll also recommend AdAware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/). It will
detect/remove all sorts of spyware programs that hitchhike into your
system along with other programs that you install.
