[thelist] sendmail 8.12.5-7 problem

hi.

(with regards to the version number of sendmail, i believe i typed it
correctly but just to be clear, it is the sendmail that comes by default
with redhat 8.)

i'm trying to get sendmail working on a redhat 8 box i just installed.
so far i am able to send emails, but i cannot receive emails.
connections to port 25 are refused.

1. service iptables stop, does not allow access.
2. even adding a dnl in front of a specific line (that i cannot remember
right now) in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc does not help. (yes i know i have to
rebuild the sendmail.cf and restart the services. i even confirmed the
absence of the generated line in sendmail.cf after the rebuild.) this
"fix" according to quite a few documents should do the trick when it
comes to this "connection refused" issue with redhat 7.1 and greater.
(iirc)

i can telnet 127.0.0.1 25 and gain access, but not from another box, or
to (by "to" i mean the boxes external ip address) any other ip address.
as well, i can send email using pine to chris at localhost but not from or
to any other address (except those ending in @localhost).

any ideas? what else should i check?

btw, i have not created a /etc/mail/relay-domains file, or an access
file because i assumed those only dealt with relay permissions and that
is not my intent right now. so i didn't want to mess with them since i
am new to linux.

i will appreciate any documents/resources/comments/ideas you have.

thanks,
chris.
