Subject: [thelist] mapped drives over VPN (win2k)

: i'm trying to create a mapped drive while using a VPN but it's not
: working. i am seemingly unable to reach any computers on the network
: aside from my own.
:
: it's my understanding that a VPN is *supposed* to be the same thing as
: actually being on the network. if that's the case why can't i map a
: drive or access any other computers?

If you can't see any of the other machines on the internal network, then it
seems like either:
a) the VPN endpoint isn't setup properly or
b) you're having name resolution problems

In any case, you wont be able to map a drive letter.

If the internal network is running TCP/IP, I suggest you test network
connectivity by trying to ping some of the internal hosts. If you can't even
do that, then your VPN endpoint (whatever it is - MS RRAS, or hardware
device) probably isn't configured properly (eg it's not routing properly).

In any case, I suggest you contact your network administrator about this. If
you are the network administrator, suggest you post your config details to a
system administration list. If you're using Windows RRAS, try the NTSysAdmin
list available here: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/forums/

Cheers
