I should have explained this more fully in the tip but didn't want to ramble
on too much.

We did think of hiding them, but the reason we couldn't in our particular
situation was that the drop-down menus that were causing the problem were
*half-covering* the SELECT control... so we either had to rearrange things
so that the menus completely obscured the SELECT (so we could hide it when
they were visible), or rearrange things so the menus didn't cover the SELECT
at all. In the end we decided on the latter.

But of course you're right; strictly speaking there are solutions other than
repositioning, the applicability of which will depend on your own particular
circumstances.
