presumably the server is not co-located (i.e. they do more to the box
then cycle the power, provide space and networking), and likely does
not operate autonomously in their environment, so i don't think it's
over zealous at all.  installing a compromising package on one machine
can affect others.

absolutely.  buying new hardware would probably be going too far, but
certainly labor costs are justifiable.
