Can't you thumbnail the images for the main browsing, and if they need the detailed, let them click and see the larger image?  Seems to me like a small re-write to use thumbs would be easier and more flexible - what happens when new images/items are added?  Do you send out new CD's?

There are site-grabbers out there, someone will post a link I'm sure, that can "archive" a site for you so you could put it on CD.

I have a dynamic thumbnailer script written in Python that I would be more than willing to part with if you're interested.
