Okay just adding my 2c worth here.

If you want an example of a hacking community, you could look at evolt
as a similar example. I publish php code to do something, someone else
takes it and makes it better and posts it back to the community or keeps
it. 

Crackers, well they are a law unto themsleves. Skilled computer heads,
with misguided principles and ideas. 

Never be ashamed to correct ppl on the meaning of the word hacker.
