What I would do is find an instance (or create one) of whatever extended
string I wanted to replace, with special characters embedded, then Alt-C
(copy) and Alt-V (paste) it into the extended search and replace. those
'special characters' appear as non-printable characters. I do not know
of a a programatic way to generate a tab inside the search-replace
window and I never got it to work when I tried either, so I would just
go copy a tab and paste it into the window.
