Tim,

Using tables is not necessary for this more complicated structured 
list, but it is the one thing they supposed to be used for. It would 
still be valid 'web standards' markup.

Having said that I can see why there is a gap. The box containing the 
bar is fluid. The class 'desc' floats to the right and causes this gap, 
but only when the browser window is wide enough. (scale the browser 
window).
Each grey bar element has a fixed width, and thus so should the 
containing box. The 'display' implementation of tables in CSS2 across 
browsers is not yet sufficient to be useful. Tables would be better. (a 
case in point: http://www.pga.com/openchampionship/)
