Win98/2000
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information>

In System Information

Tools>Internet Explorer Repair Tool>

There are three choices
Repair
Add a component
Restore Previous....

Start with repair.
This only works if you have not removed the cab files created when you
upgraded from a clean install.

Restore Previous....
This will restore the original version provided you have not upgraded to
6.02.
(some of the fixes and patches here are n_o_t reversable)
If this works you can then install the latest 6.02 version from the Windows
Update Site.

Yep it sucks but you need to update as IE is not a standalone product but is
integrated into the operating system as the file browser and file manager.

With a bad or corrupt installation, windows becomes progressively
unmanageable and unusable.

The ultimate unusability arrives when on boot up you get the screen saying
that "windows registry checker has detected an error and will restart to fix
the problem" You are hosed at this point and must reinstall windows.

You can save your data.
You need two things.
on your harddrive you need a win98 directory
in this directory you need all the cab files from the win98 cd in the win98
directory.
(win2000 - this is the I386 Folder)
You will need to create a start up disk
Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs>
Start Up Disk

!!!You will need to check your BIOS and make the floppy the first boot
device.
Boot from Start Up Disk floppy.
Select the 'Start with CD Rom support'
Choice 1

>From the A:>
type c:
At C:\
type cd\win98
At the c:\win98>
type setup
When windows asks you for the directory for windows..
MAKE SURE it says C:\windows.
You need to overwrite these files to keep your data, links, desktop
settings, ect.
If you install into the c:\windows.000 directory you will loose all your
links, configuration information and will have to re-install all your
drivers, programs, favorites, links and anything else you have accumulated
over time.

Good Luck!
