tony...

the world may have gone mad... but not due to this!!!!

hey..it's a fact... if you develop something novel/unique/etc.... then you
perhaps should have a right to make $$$ off it. if you develop some code for
a customer, you don't want somebody else ripping you off. neither does the
guy who's developed something and patented it... this is the way the
ballgame is played....

in the case of plug-in technology... apparently there are a number of patent
issues surrounding it. in this case, msoft's pissed because they're on the
other side of the shoe.. there have been numerous cases where they've filed
suit... it's a price of biz... and yes, the fact is that plug-ins might go
away, at least as you or i know them...

complain all you want, but the biz that has the patents might not really
listen to you!!!

this is the way biz is done.... welcome to the world... is it a pain..yeah..
do i like it...no.. would i fight like hell to make sure you don't infringe
on my patent if i had one that was valuable..hell yes!!! and i'm pretty sure
you would too!

but this is also why for some things, it's good put them into the public
good.... the trouble with this approach..is who gets to decide what's in the
public good... so the best approach, is if you come up with a patentable
idea.. and you think it has serious value..go ahead and put it into the
public domain... there are a number of organizations that would work with
you to make sure it couldn't be taken private....

have fun!!

ps. for laughs...check out the patent issues/fights that are slowly starting
with streaming audio/video.. acacia research..(sp?) they're going after the
adult industry, claiming that streaming of content infringes on their
patents...

Am I reading this right?

http://news.com.com/2100-1032_3-5074799.html

A java applet linked from a web page infringes a patent and all such
applets and plug-ins will need new delivery mechanisms as yet unthought of?

How do I complain?

next thing we know it'll be animated gifs and banner ads served from a
different server.

World's gone mad I say!

;o)
