do not use BR in source which is already properly marked up

it is, indeed, hackish and ugly

and speaking of ugly, what's so wrong with the default presentation of
definition lists that it requires "compacting"?

white space is helpful, and running the dt and dd onto the same line makes
the definition list harder to read

here's what i use:

  dt { margin-top: 2em; font-weight: bold; }
