the approach i'd take, personally, would be different.

i'd give the <div> containing the contain a left-padding wide enough to
accomodate the vertical text.  then, i'd apply the image with the vertical
text as a non-repeating background, positioned top left, to the <div> for
the content.  now you won't have that annoying issue of the text jumping
below the image when the browser window is narrower than your fixed width
content.
