Thanks, James. I tried it and it gave me a preliminary analysis of the
LaCie disk but unfortunately couldn't read any segments. I've switched
to a Maxtor 250 FW/USB 2 for an immediate back-up, and will now try to
resurrect the drive by reformatting. Can't really trust it again for
permanent stuff even if it works, though, I suppose. 

The R-Studio software appears to have the right stuff and I intend to
buy it anyway, it has several useful features. Thanks for the
recommendation.
