I usually use the field of photography as an analogy to web design
because it seems to hold many similarities. Just like web design, anyone
can own and use a camera. Anyone can take a photo and anyone can even
take a good photo.

However, when it comes to a wedding, family portraits, or a commercial
shoot for that new product, most people realize the benefit of hiring a
professional. And yet, anyone can take a good photo.

The only difference is that photography has had over 100 years to prove
its place in society and now we accept the role of professional
photographers without even thinking about it. Even though, anyone can
take a good photo.

But what is it that distinguishes a professional photographer from an
amateur? The answer to that question is that same as the answer to what
differentiates a professional web designer from a 12 year old.

On some level, most people seem to understand this analogy.

I have to agree, insulting the clients kid is probably the worse thing
you could do. Educating the client and making him a wiser, smarter
person is always the best route. If given the choice, always choose the
high road.
