I've done it!! There's a very clever bit of software called jCIFS which is free, downloadable and easy to configure at http://jcifs.samba.org/. This does just the business for jsp and request.getRemoteUser() now returns DOMAIN\username. Perfect. Thanks to google and the now-forgotten poster to the list I found the link on.
