Surely you meant the other way around, too pricey for most individuals and
many small businesses.

That aside, the cost of the app server is really a moot point as most
individuals and small businesses won't be hosting the website on their own
hardware and therefore won't have to shoulder the expense of the necessary
licenses (os potentially, db potentially, and cf).  Following that same line
of reasoning, those that will be hosting it on their own hardware probably
have costs in development, hosting, and personal for their website that
dwarf the licensing costs.

Before anybody goes on about ColdFusion hosting being more expensive, let me
enlighten you now that that's simply not true.  There are lots of full
featured hosting providers that offer ColdFusion hosting at a rate that any
profit-minded individual or small business could see the value in.
