I would suggest to go with Linux for a millions of reasons (I'm afraid 
that I will go off topic and made list admins angry, so I can write you 
of the list if you want)

Hosting have never been cheaper. You can even get a Linux box with a 
Mailman preinstaled and ready for use. You will not have any 'super 
heavy Linux' configuration. If you can use YahooGroups than you will be 
able to use Mailman.
