Yes, I agree. I think a specific style for external links (another 
benefit of using class="external", which I mentioned earlier in the 
thread) is helpful in this case - perhaps something with an image, 
placed just before or after the link (good use for the :before and 
:after pseudo-classes - damn IE!), that conveys the new window idea.
