Subject: [thelist] cold fusion verse php

hey all! so i've just started working for this small company and i'm basically the lead web designer now (just me and another contractor right now). anyways, in the past they have used Cold Fusion MX for a few projects but the people that coded those are no longer around. and now that i'm taking on a few projects i can either continue to use CF or migrate to PHP. and that is the decision i need a bit of help on. i've worked with PHP a lot more than CF and doing research i found this great article comparing the two:

http://php.weblogs.com/php_vs_cold_fusion

however, i know this article is somewhat out of date, with the release of CFMX and PHP 5.0.

in terms of our servers, we are running Windows 2000, with a planned upgrade to Windows 2003 very soon. IIS is the choice of servers. current projects would benefit heavily from template based systems (smarty would be great to use, can't seem to find a great CF counterpart) and fairly simple database transactions. future projects could be more backend instensive. also, currently i've heard that the server running win2000 and cfmx/jrun tends to crash as a result of cfmx and the main websites hosted there will be redone very soon (so redoing in either CF or PHP is not a problem).

and cost is always an issue.

should i tell them to dump CFMX if they don't need to support it (since likely i'll be in charge of supporting those sites anyway) and tell them to go with PHP, since it is free and will save costs there? doesn't seem like there is a real advantage to keep both. not to mention there is a lot more resources out there for PHP then CF. any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,
ted
