Neither did I !

Joshua is dead on.

For what it's worth, I missed the part in the thread where you mentioned the
client didn't want a database.  Did you also say why they don't want one?

If you need any extra amunition to convince your client that they should do
it the right way (in addition to what Joshua already gave you) then try this
as well:  As much as we all like to think that our clients will be our
clients forever, it is possible that down the road someone else may take
over where you left off.  (You get hit by a truck, abducted by aliens...)
The best way to protect your client's investment is to build an app that
conforms to development norms... a system that somebody else could take over
with a minimal learning curve.  Working with other people's code is hard
enough... If you build them some weird, un-normal application, it will only
make it harder for someone else to pick up where you left off.

The trouble with customers is they often don't know what they want, and need
to be taught.
