[thelist] User auth on php running as cgi on windows?

I'll find out if mcrypt is installed. 

The hack I came up with was setting 2 form fields "user"/"pass" and
comparing their values to a hard-coded variable in my validation script. 

Obviously this isn't a recommended practice, but what are the cons other
than "if anyone has access to the server they can see the password in the
script"?
