I've used older versions of TheGimp and found it adequate (not stellar) 
for photo editing. I'll have to give the new version a go sometime.

Oh, and while you're compiling a list of open source graphics apps, 
don't forget InkScape (http://www.inkscape.org/). Haven't tried it yet, 
but it looks like it might be an acceptable replacement for Illustrator.
